Scunthorpe U v Bradford C (4:1)

Deb Hearn opened the scoring with a blistering strike after a few minutes. Scunthorpe dominated taking advantage of the back wind. Sue Hunsley on the right flank & Carrie Dodge on the left gave United much needed width.

The wind in the second half was going to pose the same problems for the home side as it had for Bradford but Scunny coped well and had the Bradford goal under some pressure for the next 45 mins. The third goal came half way through the half from Sue Hunsley who was alert to what looked like a stoppage in play to crack home a great goal. Every one of several corners looked dangerous as they were swung in from Sue Green and from one of these set pieces Smithson stuck in her 2nd goal from a goalmouth melee.

Bradford managed to score themselves a goal towards the end of the game but Becky Evans otherwise had good game commanding her area well through the game.

The MotM was Natasha Cooke but good games from B.Evans, S.Hunsley

Scun Utd ladies v Lincoln C (3:2) (County Cup)

I thought Lincoln City might have posted a match report in which case I was going to cut n paste those erudite words here. Unfortunately I was a bit consumed with camera settings and whatnot so while I think Scunny won because of the celebration pics thats about it.
Natasha Cooke was outstanding again but there was big games from the usual suspects - Sue Hunsley and Sue Green, the goalkeeper Becky Evans and Deb Hearn. But the whole team go from strength to strength.
Sue Hunsley scored first, Lincoln levelled from a fabulous strike and early in the 2nd half they made it 2:1 before Mandy Cook made it 2:2 with a trademark bullet header after Lincoln looked like repeating last seasons result. All that was needed then was a sublime corner kick from Green to make it 2:3 and then running the clock down. Scunthorpe won the cup five times in a row as Lincoln built up their side before the pendulum swung to City and a five year run. So the cycle starts again.
A word about the somewhat weakened Lincoln squad, Lincs FA decreed that no contract players should be allowed which denied games for at least three first team members. In many people's opinion this waters down the event and Lincoln City may well veto next seasons competition.

With three league games left Scunny are 9 unbeaten in all competions and 6 in the league proper. The goals situation is finally looking a little rosier - the defence has been strong for some time and so next season should see further improvements. Three more wins would leave the ironesses on 37 points from 11 wins.

Scun Utd ladies reserves v Grimsby Town (2:1) LeagueCup

Scunny reserves put in a big team effort last night at Gainsborough Trinity ground.

Carrie Dodge led the team out and played striker. Sue Hunsley who was MotM was always causing the defence on to the back foot and it was her strike crashing off the crossbar that was knocked in by Jo Moorhouse midway through the first half. Scunthorpe went in one up looking reasonably comfortable.

In the second half the game was stretched out with Scunthorpe having a few attempts after Town needed up to push up. In this early period of the 2nd half Sue Hunsley who was tireless put Scunny two up with a clinical finish. Town got themselves a dubious penalty soon after which was subsequently skied and perhaps justice was done. In this period of pressure though Town got themselves a goal a few minutes later. It was all too late for the East Coast side though and Scunny managed to hang on for a great win. They lie second in their league now and pushing for promotion.

Scun Utd ladies v Curzon Ashton (2:2) part2

Last Sunday Scunthorpe United Ladies took on Curzon Ashton who recently have been crowned champions of the league, not having dropped a point all season. United knew this was going to be a tough game but the players were focussed and determined to give it their best shot.

United lost the toss and had to kick into a strong wind in the first half, which added to the difficulty of the task, Curzon tried to use the wind to their advantage by playing long balls over the top of the defense, but on many occasions they misjudged the wind and the ball went out of play causing no problems to United. Scunthorpe battled hard in the first half and the back four consisting of Baker, Cook, Harrison and Cooke were outstanding and fought hard to clear any dangerous attacks as Curzon realised that it was better for them to pass the ball to feet and they are an excellent passing side. It was a pretty even half with both teams competing well, but it was Curzon who took the lead when they were awarded a free kick about 25 yards away from the goal. With the wind behind them they opted for a direct shot at goal, which was well struck and gave Evans in goal no chance of keeping it out. United playing well were not disheartened and kept playing at the same pace, they passed the ball around well and West on the right hand side of midfield forced Curzon to defend with some good attacking runs. It was somewhat against the run of play when the next gaol was scored and again it went to the away side. A long ball played forwards was misjudged by Evans because of the strong wind which again resulted in the ball ending up in Uniteds net. With about 15 minutes of the half left United still thought that they were in with a good chance of getting something out of the game. Sue Green having an excellent game in the middle of midfield decided to take the game into her own hands an drove at the heart of Curzons defense with one of her trademark runs, spotting Lisa Telford to her left she laid an excellent ball off to her which Telford confidently struck low and hard across the keeper into the bottom corner of the net taking the score into the half time interval to 2-1.

The second half United had the advantage of the wind, but didn’t resort to the long ball, they carried on playing the controlled football that they had shown in the first half. Donna Smithson partnering Telford up front showed some good battling qualities and put Curzon’s defenders under pressure at every available opportunity. Sue Hunsley worked hard on the left of midfield and teamed up well with Natasha Cooke to provide some excellent service. Curzon though were not about to give up their 100 percent record without a fight and they passed the ball around confidently, their best opportunity coming from a cross from the right which their centre forward met on the volley, but Evans was on hand to produce a great reaction save. United managed to keep up the pace of the game throughout the second half and deservedly got their equaliser about three quarters through the half. Hearn won the ball in midfield and played the ball forwards to Smithson. She showed good vision to play a good ball into the path of West on the right. West then accelerated down the wing and crossed the ball into the middle of the box, Smithson having made up the ground took the ball well in her stride to hit the ball first time with her right foot leaving the goal keeper with no chance. At 2-2 Scunthorpe pressed forwards and looked to try and get the third goal, Curzon battled hard to keep them at bay and themselves tried to hit United on the break. The match finished 2-2, a well deserved point for Scunthorpe who are the first team to take points of Curzon all season.

I thought Sue Green edged MotM though Donna Smithson & Natasha Cooke were good candidates. (MH)

You can't win....

As a sports tog I have to remain pretty unbiased as to who when what I take a picture of. It just isn't true that there is any favouritsm. People say '...there's too much of the opposition in the pics...' or some such.
About all I can say is that if you happen to be involved more in the game then you stand more chance of being in a photo. I just generally follow the ball about or the ref when its dead. No special treatment unless you can prove you are a Communist. Then I will gladly promote your image. That or Kelly Smith might get special coverage. Well, blondes first then brunettes and length of legs/bust size & makeup technique might swing it if there is little action :o) But best of all is pound notes, which guarantees coverage.

Lincoln Moorlands v Scunthorpe, CCup (0:10)

Scunthorpe were involved in the Semi-finals of the Lincolnshire Cup and faced a Lincoln Moorlands team from below them in the pyramid. It was always going to be an uphill struggle for the home side even though Scunny haven't played a game in three weeks they are unbeaten in a couple of months or so and are one of the better sides away from home playing in the Northern Combinations.

It was a promising start for Railway who hung on for about 17 mins and contained the MOTM Claire West on several breaks before striker Lisa Telford struck home from 7 yards. West was applying lots of pressure on the right wing and struck another shot two minutes later before the first Railway foray in to the Scunny half came to nothing. Sue Hunsley the left-winger for Scunthorpe niggled the home side all through the match and appeared on the score sheet after 29 minutes with a strike just outside the penalty box. The last two minutes of normal time resulted in a corner from the right clearing everyone including the keeper for a typical Sue Green goal. A minute later and the score was 0:4 after an own goal deflected in.

The game was effectively over into the early stages of the second half as Mandy Cook scored from a headed corner on 55 minutes and then Claire West completed her brace, and Jo Moorhouse got on the scoresheet with a clinical strike which made the score 0:7. Railway were reeling from the onslaught and were waving the white flag after Lisa Telford then Sue Hunsley and sub Carrie Dodge, with the strike of the game on 73 mins rounding up the score neatly to 0:10 before the final whistle came thankfully for the home side.

Scun Utd ladies v Hull City (2:0)

Scunthorpe United Ladies entertained Hull City at weekend and came away with a convincing 2 - 0 win.
Scunthorpe dominated and controlled the first half with some good passages of play through out the whole of the team. The first goal came after 15 minutes when the ironesses had had a corner cleared but kept the pressure on Hull with an attack down the right with Sue Green crossing in accurately to see Claire West convert with a strong low shot to give the keeper no chance, Scunthorpe had many chances with Lisa Telford and Donna Smithson coming close but it was Sue Hunsley that doubled their lead with a fierce shot just inside the box to crash home the second. It was one way traffic and any attack Hull threatened was banished by a solid defence of Cooke,Harrison,Cook and Baker. Scunthorpe had a goal disallowed when Deb Hearn fired home but alleged pushing in the box meant the goal did not stand so it remained at 2-0 at half time.

The second half saw Hull start with more passion and determination, but even though Hull had a few more attacking plays United worked well as a team and defended when they had to in a very organised professional way. Bek Evans in goal for the Ironesses was commanding and when called upon was brave diving at the feet of the oncoming strikers. Scunthorpe could have added more to their tally Donna Smithson made a good run into the box late into the game and met a cross coming in from the right with a first time shot that narrowly missed. No further goals were added in the second half so the score remained 2-0 and meant Hull City are just about relegated.

Scunthorpe are in the semi final of the Womens County Cup away against Lincoln Moorlands Railway this week.
