Salford v Scun Utd ladies (1:1)

Salford Sports v Scunthorpe Utd (1:1)

Scunthorpe lined up against Manchester side Salford Sports who have been improving in recent weeks and turned out better than their league position suggested. They were desperate to get something from the game given their precarious place in the league and deserved a share of the points.

The game was played on artificial surface and obviously gives teams that are used to it an advantage. Scunny struggled with the bounce and the oppositions tenacity for 45 mins in a typically congested middle third of the pitch with Salford ladies winning the possession stats. Several attacks later the home team still had nothing to show which was down to some dogged defence from Deb Hearn and the backs and another excellent brave performance from Scunthorpe's keeper.

The away side improved in the second half with Sue Green, Sue Hunsley and later, sub Sophie Bell exploiting the right wing and Claire West getting some joy on the left. It was a great cross from Sue Green that brought a fantastic finish from Donna Smithson after 15 mins of the second half. While Scunny looked brighter Salford never gave up and close to the final whistle the Scunny No.7 gave away a free kick just outside the box that was bungled in after what looked a blatant foul on Goalie Becky Evans.

Captain Deb Hearn was tireless again and won MotM.

Latest news...

Scunny away to Salford on Sunday. A team that must fancy their chances of staying up n though they are currently struggling and will make a fight of it on the 10th no doubt.

Some news that the Premium TV site (link below) now has an Ironesses section and they are looking for player biographies and head and shoulder pics. I will do the pics but if players want to email any details they want to share then I will pass it on to Scunny's webmaster. I think things like favourite player (men/women); team; food ;music. Your occupation and age type of thing. If you dont want to contribute thats fine or if you want to make it all up thats fine. Whatever as they say!

Sleaford v Scunny ladies reserves (0:2)

In the Licolnshire league cup, Carrie Dodge scored twice and Scunny progress through to the next round.

Scunthorpe v Caernarfon (3:2)

Very much a game of two halves, Scunthorpe dominated the first 45mins with Lisa Telford and Donna Smithson and Claire West all a handful for the Caernarfon defence. The Welsh side occasionally looked dangerous on the counter and Becky Evans in the Scunny goal was called on a few times to keep the score at nil for the home team. Scunny opened the scoring with a deflected own goal. Sue Green was on deadly form with her accurate corners and captain Deb Hearn firstly with a brave glancing header and then Mandy Cook both scoring from her deadball kicks. So Scunthorpe went in 3:0 up at half time and just had to shut up shop for the next half.

The second half was strangely all about Scunny hanging on to the 3 points rather than coasting home. The first Caernarfon goal was a soft goal to give away and it looked like the visitors half time talk had been more effective. After Caernarfon’s goal two in the latter stages and little to report from the Scunny strikers it was looking more like a point each.

Claire West gave way to a short spell by Sophie Bell on the right side. Becky Evans got my Motm.
